I was born in 1991 and raised surrounded by books and languages. French was the first to make me fall head over heels for an entire country. I owe English many tears of frustration over the way languages are taught to schoolchildren. Spanish and its rolled ‘r’ helped me to accept defeat, and Danish and its 41 vowel variations taught me a lot about absurdity. I might have turned my back on languages in the university context but the love for words and the absurd have stayed with me. It turns out, conflicts about caricatures, violent religious sects, and even menstruation can all make good research topics.
